Give 'Em The Pickle

927 Jodi Crompton, who describes herself as a “very amateur photographer, but learning every day” submitted this excellent image through the SOTM Flickr group. It was in her home in Providence, Utah, US and it is absolutely brilliant, both in terms of the image and the accompanying story.

Jodi wrote: “We had to watch a video at work one day about customer service. I don't remember the story exactly, but these are the basics. A man had a favorite restaurant that he went to all the time. He really loved their pickles they put on the side and would ask for more. They brought them, but charged him like $3 for a couple pickles. It bothered him quite a bit.

"He felt like they should just give extra pickles if they were asked for, as a kindness to good customers. Later he opened his own business, that had nothing to do with pickles, but he made that the motto for his workers.

"'Always give them the pickle.' In other words, go that extra mile to help your customers and they will come back. We watched this like 3 years ago, but we all remember that concept. At the post office, if we get a letter with a wrong address, but we know where it goes, we say I'm gonna give him the pickle.

"Whenever we do more than is necessary to get things where they go--Let's give 'em the pickle. Silly phrase, great business motto.”

"They have this story all over my school i hate it...The story was pretty much the guy bitched at the cashier and the company gave in. The guy was a jerk, got his way and the cashier got undermined"

"I saw this in 2002 when I started working for a customer support company in sweden, and I also remember this one very well :)"
