The Life That I Have Is All That I Have, And The Life That I Have Is Yours

1908“This is the first line of a poem by a famous woman who was half French, half English. Her French husband got killed quite soon in World War II after they married and she was approached by the British War Office and asked to do this job to go into France and blow up bridges.

“She got back to Britain once – she had a little girl and everything - and she went again. She was caught and tortured by the Nazis. That poem was something she memorised as part of a code.”

It is called The Life That I Have and the woman our subject refers to is Violette Szabo.

Taken at the Age UK Camden resource centre in Hampstead, London, UK.
