2412Derek says in his audio clip that: “When I was a young kid my father would put me to bed every night.

”To get me to go to sleep he would sing me a song. He was just a guy who worked in this office building and didn’t have a lot of time to spend with his kids but we were a TV family. We watched TV together all the time.

”So one night this tradition of singing to me started. He’d sing this song. It was the Beverley Hillbillies theme song, which was such a weird thing to put someone to sleep to.

But he sang it out of this idea that a) I can get you to sleep, because you cry all the time b) it’s about a person pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, making a living doing what they want to do.

”I grew up in New Jersey but I later moved to Los Angeles and got to work on those lots where they shot that show and my father still, to this day, sends me audio of him singing that song to me, like on my birthday. It’s the weirdest thing but I love him for it.”
