2009Foreign Language Friday: “I was learning Spanish in Spain, in Seville,” she says in her audio clip. “I’d just moved into a new flat, so I wanted to buy a chicken, to do a roast for my flatmates. I went to the supermarket and some woman took the last packet off the shelf.

“I thought I’d practice my Spanish so found a guy who worked in the shop. I didn’t know how to say it properly so I just said: ‘Where chicken?’ Unfortunately in Spanish the word pollo, for chicken, sounds like polla, which means dick.

“So I asked: ‘Where is the dick?’ in Spanish. Then I started asking for ‘polla grande?’ and doing signs for a big chicken. The man in the shop kept saying he didn’t know what I meant. I was pointing to the back room and saying: ‘Have you got any in there?’ Eventually he’s like: ‘Ah, pollo, not polla’.

That supermarket was five minutes walk from my apartment – from then on I had to walk 40 minutes to go to another one.”
