2315This is the wonderful Mama Gladys, who runs the Door of Hope orphanage in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, which looks after about 40 children.

Of her SOTM, Mama Gladys says in her audio commentary that: “When I was young, I never had my parents because they were separated. When I was 20 years I met my mother.

”She only said to me: ‘You’ll never become anything, you’re stupid, you’re this and that.’ And that made my self esteem to be very low.

”So when I grew up I started taking care of children, and many people came and said this to me. I couldn’t believe them in the beginning, but as time was going on I started becoming beautiful, becoming better because these people kept on coming, from different countries.

“So when people says this in Xhosa to me, it means so much to me.”

Taken at the Door of Hope orphanage - where you can volunteer - with the help of Khaya Volunteer on the SOTM World Tour.
