Da! Ovo Je Vlak Do Beograda!

2037Foreign Language Friday: This is erotic author KD Grace, who has a tale of trains and misunderstandings in the former Yugoslavia. She explains in her audio clip that she and her husband first met and dated in that country.

“Every weekend we would go exploring somewhere. One time we got a train to meet friends in Belgrade. I asked the conductor in Croatian if this was the right train. He replied: ‘Yes, this is the train to Belgrade’. We stopped at the new station in Belgrade and I knew not to get off, as it was that city’s main station which we needed.

”But the train didn’t stop after that. After 30 minutes we hunted down the conductor and he explained how it only stopped at the new station, but not to worry as they would let us off at Lapovo, the next stop down the line.

”There’s a saying in Croatian that means in the middle of nowhere – behind God’s leg. This place was definitely behind God’s leg. Two hours later we arrive there and walk along muddy paths – there were no sidewalks – to an all-night diner, waiting for the next train back to Belgrade, which is in another two hours.

”I’m really upset because I’ve gotten us into this mess. I’m apologising to him, but my then-boyfriend - he became my husband because of this – said: ‘Hey, don’t worry about it. It was an adventure. It was wonderful.’ That’s when I knew I loved the man.”
