2034This is Derek Mills, known as “The Standards Guy” and creator of “The 10 Second Philosophy”. He met me in Piccadilly Circus, London to tell me a powerful story of a moment which led him to turn his life around.

He says in his audio clip that: “Up until about November 2003 I’d been in business for about 18 and I was really a failure. I was just paying the bills, struggling each month, unhappy, not seeing my family, working six days a week.

"That November I was in the office at 9.30pm. A security guard came in to as about locking up and I asked him for 10 more minutes.

”I shuffled some more paper and wondered who I could call the next time in order to find some more business. The guard came back and I asked for two more minutes. He stopped as he walked away, looked at me and said this to me. I replied that it was 8am.

”As he walked away my words just hung in the air as I’d been up since six, on the road at seven, in the office at eight. This was my regular pattern for as many years as I could remember. In that moment, as he walked away, my life changed completely. I was rooted to the spot.

”I had a shift. The whole of my insides said ‘Look. You’ve been setting goals for 18 years. Yet here you are, broke and almost depressed.’

"As I stood there I had what I call the 10 second moment, because in that 10 seconds all these concepts came to me that literally gave me ideas, thoughts, questions and phrases that changed my whole life. I decided I would stop setting goals, and start setting standards, by which to live each day. I also decided to live the rest of my life as me. Not as others thought of me, but as me.
